ELEMENTS 1.0
A NEW ERA OF EXPERIMENTATION
Our incredible distillery team had free rein to experiment and push the boundaries with the Laphroaig Elements Series. They’ve amped up the flavour of Elements 1.0 with a few main factors. We usually use two 5.5 tonne mashes to make Laphroaig, but for Elements, the team also added an 8.5 tonne mash. This size was used pre-1990s, so this combination of 8.5 and 11 tonne mash is a mix of styles from today and from the past.
From the mash, we always pull semi-cloudy wort, which gives our liquid a fruity flavour that doesn’t compromise on peaty punch. This time, we also pulled out the cloudy wort to really add more peat and phenolics to the tropical fruit notes.
This whisky’s 55-hour fermentation was personally overseen by former Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer, and in his own words, is an exciting, diverse and experimental Laphroaig. We’ve explored different cask finishing and maturation styles with our whisky before, but this series is about what else we can change at the distillery itself to find new flavours.
The fun doesn’t just stop with the spirit in Elements 1.0 - we’ve also given its packaging a unique design inspired by sketches showing designs for our distillery expansion in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
ELEMENTS 1.0 Faq
Laphroaig Elements 1.0 is the first release in our Elements series, created to explore what happens when we experiment with the whisky-making process itself. Made using two sizes of mash tun, cloudy and semi-cloudy wort, and a 55-hour fermentation, it reveals a bold, experimental side of Laphroaig while staying true to our unmistakable Islay character. Expect spicy pepper, charred pineapple, tangy liquorice, and a long, peaty finish.
The Elements series is not about one release being better than the last. Each chapter is different by design. Elements 1.0 explores mashing, wort, and fermentation, Elements 2.0 focuses on extended fermentation, and Elements 3.0 looks at the impact of heat and smoke. Together, they show different ways our distillery team can shape flavour while keeping Laphroaig proudly Laphroaig.
Yes. Elements 1.0 is a limited-edition whisky release and the first chapter in our experimental Elements series. It was created as a small batch expression for those who want to explore a different side of Laphroaig, shaped by innovation in mashing, fermentation, and flavour.
Elements 1.0 was personally overseen by former Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer. His role was central to guiding the 55-hour fermentation and helping shape what he described as an exciting, diverse, and experimental Laphroaig. It reflects our distillery team’s curiosity, craft, and willingness to push the process further in search of new flavours.
For the most peat-led experience, Elements 3.0 is the release most directly shaped by fire, heat, and smoke. Elements 1.0 also brings bigger peat and phenolic notes through its use of cloudy wort, with a long, peaty finish. But if you are looking for the Elements release where smoke takes the lead most clearly, Elements 3.0 is the one to explore.
